Deepfakes in Insurance Claims: How the Claim Expert and IdentifAI Solution Works
In February 2026, Claim Expert announced a partnership with IdentifAI, an Italian startup specialising in the detection of AI-generated content. The collaboration addresses a growing operational challenge: deepfake-based insurance fraud — involving fabricated images, videos, and audio — increased by 19% in just the first quarter of 2025 compared to all of 2024.
The problem: visual fraud has become industrialised
Traditional insurance fraud detection focused on inflated claims, false testimony, and statistical anomalies. The landscape has shifted: with today's generative AI tools, it is possible to produce
photographs of undamaged vehicles appearing severely damaged, videos of fabricated accident dynamics, and digitally falsified medical reports that pass superficial review.
The scale of the problem is significant: 46% of fraud prevention specialists have already encountered identity-based or visually manipulated fraud. The average loss per incident exceeds $280,000. And 85% of organisations experienced at least one deepfake-related incident in 2024.
How the solution works
IdentifAI has developed a 'degenerative AI' platform that analyses images, videos, and audio files to determine — with high probability — whether the content is authentic or produced by a
generative AI system. The technology detects patterns invisible to the human eye: anomalous compression artefacts, pixel-level inconsistencies, and traces left by generative models.
Within the partnership framework, this technology is integrated directly into Claim Expert's operational processes:
- During investigation: photographs and videos attached to a claim are analysed by IdentifAI before the adjuster proceeds with damage assessment
- During expert assessment: digital content produced by repair shops, medical centres, or third parties is certified for authenticity
- During dispute management: documentary evidence supporting a compensation request is validated before any settlement agreement
Furthermore, we give our clients the option to integrate the IdentifAI solution directly into their organisational processes, specifically:
- running POCs in a test environment on the IdentifAI web app;
- for a more structured and large-scale analysis, connecting the IdentifAI tool via API with the Company’s management platform, so that any document can be automatically scanned.
The value for insurers
The outsourcing model offers a structural advantage: insurers do not need to build internal technological capability or operational know-how to manage this new risk category. They activate a service that is already operational, with a certified procedural chain already in place.
As IVASS updates its anti-fraud regulatory framework to explicitly include digital fraud categories, the Claim Expert-IdentifAI partnership positions insurers ahead of the supervisory expectations.
How Claim Expert Intervenes
For claims departments already encountering anomalies in digital content, or seeking to assess exposure ahead of the curve, the Claim Expert Technical Team is available for a technical discussion. The service can be activated on individual files or specific claim flows, without requiring IT integration in the initial phase.
